Mallett Article
This fully-documented Mallett Cars Ltd. development vehicle being offered
for sale is the first
(and only) Mallett conversion produced in 1997 (Mallett conversions for
public sale began w/ the
1998 model year). Officially the first Mallett 435 package conversion, it
was used for R&D, and in
various venues such as the 1-Lap of America, Car and Driver 0-150-0
shootout and various
Corvette-Viper shootout events. Meticulously maintained (and never in an
accident), the vehicle
was completely refurbished and re-painted prior to the 2002 season. Less
than 6000 mi are on
the engine, Drivetrain and suspension.
MM-EX-001 has been acknowledged as the first C5 race car ever built (1997
1-Lap of America),
has appeared in many magazine articles (nationally and internationally),
television shows, the
Hot Rod Power Tour, and has recently shown up on at least 1 DVD ("Mischief
3000").
Magazine reviewers have long touted how smooth and well-mannered the
chassis is: "Once you
fold yourself into the Cobra racing seat and strap on the six-point racing
harness, the Mallett 435
is actually quite pleasant to drive." "...The result is one of the most
stable, planted Corvettes
we've driven" (Daniel Pund, Car and Driver, "Supercar Challenge", Sept.
02).
Marlan Davis writes: "You can't go wrong with 700 hp and 27.5 mpg on the
highway. Screamin'
green, dig it! Cobras, Vipers....You've been slimed."(Hot Rod, "Attack of
the Green Slime!", Oct.
02).
Equipped with a 1-of-a-kind supercharged 435 cid engine, this monster puts
down over 608
rear-wheel hp on 93 oct pump fuel! The engine is constructed starting with
a bulletproof GM
Motorsports C5R block. A billet chromoly 4340AQ nitrided crank with
chromoly rods and Wiseco
forged pistons are custom balanced and blueprinted to provide a
trouble-free rotating assembly
for operation under the most demanding situations.
A custom-modified oversized Vortech supercharger pushes 10 psi through
custom ported LS6
heads which utilize lightweight Manley valves. All supercharger air
ducting is heavy duty carbon-
fiber with high-gloss finish. A custom water-injection system keeps things
cool and detonation-
free. An oversized 4-core custom radiator and liquid-liquid engine oil
cooler help maintain
normal operating temperatures during high-performance conditions.
All that power is channeled through an M12 (Z06) 6-speed close-ratio
gearbox and 3.42
differential (both blue-printed and cryo-enhanced). An auxiliary cooler
with pump is on the
transmission, which also cools the differential. A Luk Gold Series
high-clamp load clutch won't slip
with the extra torque the engine produces. Huge Michelin 345-30-19 rear
tires (275-35-18 front)
provide the bite to launch the 3315 lb machine to a top speed of over 200
mph. Wheels are
forged billet-aluminum, utilizing the Mallett Classic 10-spoke design
(10x18 front, 12.25x19 rear)
The wheels are finished in charcoal-gray metallic powdercoat.
Alcon brakes with 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers grab the 13.5"
slotted rotors through
PFC brake pads. The stopping power of these brakes is awesome! The ABS
system is intact and
fully functional. A Tilton brake bias control has been added next to the
driver to fine-tune the
rear brakes for the driving conditions.
Double-adjustable Mallett-Penske shocks and full coil-over lowered
suspension have helped this
car place 2nd and 3rd overall in the 1997/2000 One Lap of America and 3rd
overall in the 2001
Car and Driver 0-150-0 shootout. World Challenge front splitter, side
rockers and rear spoiler
help keep the vehicle firmly planted on the track or street. On-board
data-acquisition has shown
this vehicle can pull over 1.2G on Michelin street tires (2.6G on
slicks!).
The chassis is stiffened and safety is enhanced by a 12 pt. IMSA-style
roll cage using 1.75" DOM
steel tubing. All joints are TIG welded. The cage is finished with
gun-bluing and protective oil.
Lightweight carbon-Kevlar race seats are installed while Simpson 5-point
harnesses hold you
firmly in place. An 11 lb electric-release Halon 1211 fire suppression
system (located in
the right-rear trunk compartment) has an outlet by the drivers feet, and
one in the engine
compartment.
The battery has also been relocated to the rear trunk for better weight
distribution. Factory air
conditioning and factory Bose radio and CD are fully functional.
